Review and Giveaway: 500 Writing Prompts for Kids

I was given a copy of Bryan Cohen’s 500 Writing Prompts for Kids: First Grade through Fifth Grade to review a few weeks ago. I don’t know about you but I always struggle to find topics for journal writing.  I mean sure it’s easy to say what is your favorite thing about x,y,z. But you can’t do that every day and the topics I end up with are bland, so journal writing becomes a chore and we just stop doing it.  So I was happy to receive this book, hoping that it would help me come up with some ideas and it has.

The book is divided into various themes  such as relationships, life lessons, and the outside world. Each theme is divided even further.  For example relationships is divided into family, friends, teacher, yourself and misc people. So you can find a prompt that goes with the theme or subject you want to cover.

The prompts range from simple things for the younger children such as:

Who do you get along with the best in your family? Give an example of a time you got along with this person.

To more complex questions for older children such as:

Imagine you are trapped in an elevator with five people you don’t know. It will take the maintenance crew at least an hour to get you out safely. What do you and the five strangers talk about while you’re stuck.

While we haven’t done much creative or journal writing in the past. Thanks to Bryan’s book we will be doing a lot of it this year. In fact I think I’m going to let C start a blog to use as his journal this year, and use some of the prompts from this book to help him get started.

Now it’s giveaway time.

Author Bryan Cohen is doing a giveaway of his book 500 Writing Prompts for Kids for the next week along with a grand prize drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card!
